THE WILD MAN'S CREED
Sex, drugs and alcohol can be good for you. In fact, they may be essential to your health.
Of course, a statement like that screams for a qualifier. So, as a coda to our Top Ten, we offer the following:
- Sex: As a basic form of physical exercise, sex can'be aerobic, and is good for the heart and lungs. But beyond that, experts say that a healthy sex life can help boost your immune system, ward off serious diseases and put the screws to stress. Plus, the more sex you have, the more you can have. "Getting erections helps your ability to have more erections," says Irwin Goldstein, M.D., professor of urology at Boston University School of Medicine. Regular erections keep the tissues of the penis flexible. Use it or lose it.
- Drugs: In this case, we're talking about aspirin. "It's extremely helpful for men with heart problems, and can reduce heart attack risk in men with no coronary disease," says James Pantano, M.D., author of Living with Angina. Studies indicate that taking just one 325 milligram tablet every other day may prevent dangerous blood clots from forming, cutting heart attack risk by at least 30 percent. Plus, some studies indicate that aspirin can inhibit the growth of certain types of cancer. But don't self-prescribe aspirin; you may have conditions that could be made worse by taking aspirin. Many doctors argue that it is not very sound to take drugs as a preventive measure. Talk to your doctor first.
- Alcohol: There's been plenty of evidence to show that moderate drinkingno more than one or two drinks per daycan protect against heart disease. But the operative term is moderate. More than two drinks a day is just asking for health problems, particularly in the heart, brain and liver.
One big caveat: Aspirin and alcohol don't mix well with different medicationsor each other. Taken together, alcohol and aspirin can cause internal bleeding or worse. So if you're on the aspirin program, take your pill with your meals in the morning or afternoon, have your wine in the eveningand have sex with your partner whenever you can.
